Congratulations to MERI member Prof. Akihiro Ikeda (Dept. of Medical Genetics, SMPH; Timothy William Trout Professor in Eye Research) on receiving an NIH grant for his project “Role of mitochondrial dynamics in rod photoreceptor cells”! This grant will help fund his research into the roles of mitochondrial dynamics in retinal rod photoreceptor cells with the use of mouse models. His research will provide novel insights into the relationship between mitochondrial form and function as well as the functional significance of mitochondrial dynamics in retinal health, which may suggest novel therapeutic strategies for retinal conditions associated with mitochondrial abnormalities.

Preliminary data for this grant was supported by the McPherson ERI’s Grant Summit Program, a program created specifically to increase support for UW-Madison vision research by facilitating successful resubmissions of competitive federal grant applications.
