The McPherson Eye Research Institute

The UW-Madison McPherson Eye Research Institute (MERI) is a cross-campus entity that brings together over 270 scholars working in all aspects of vision from over 52 departments within 8 schools and colleges. The MERI also supports collaborations that establish bridges between the university and relevant portions of the private sector. Institute members are committed to the development of new knowledge, the advancement of innovative technologies, and the rapid application of novel approaches to significant healthcare and basic research questions. Active outreach and education programs ensure that vision research performed in member laboratories is disseminated beyond the borders of the university. The MERI fosters an intellectual community through seminars, endowed lectures, roundtable discussions, and pilot project grant funding for new collaborative ventures. MERI offers chairs and professorships for both promising junior and established scientists and gives young investigators an opportunity to interact with other scientists with wide-ranging expertise in vision research. Multiple MERI programs and grant opportunities also exist specifically for trainees in member laboratories (undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows) to assist in their growth as scientists and advance their research careers. Members benefit from the diverse expertise within the group, and the Institute works to integrate its activities with those of other scholarly groups, enhancing the interplay between vision and other disciplines to broaden the base of scientific knowledge and to provide opportunities for new funding and other resources.
