Research
Karen Cruickshanks has more than 20 years of experience in the epidemiology of eye diseases as a co-investigator on the WESDR and BDES and as PI of two NEI-funded studies and the on-going Beaver Dam Offspring Study. Her primary eye-related research has been on genetic, environmental and behavioral risk factors for diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. She has studied biomarkers associated with the decline in the incidence of AMD and vision impairment in the Baby Boom generation. She serves as the chair of a DSMB overseeing a cataract clinical trial and has served on numerous NIH committees related to vision, an IOM panel studying blast effects on vision, and vision research-related panels for the AAO, FDA and EPA. She is a member of the ARVO (since 1990) and serves on the editorial board for Ophthalmic Epidemiology.
