Research Interests
Doris Dubielzig has taught science to students in every grade from 6 to 12, but the last twenty years of her career in the Madison Metropolitan School District focused on eighth grade science. Partly because of her own training in biology and partly because of her marriage to comparative ocular veterinary pathologist Dick Dubielzig, she taught a unit on vision that included the dissection of the bovine eye, long before it became a staple of the eighth grade science curriculum. In preparation for retirement, Doris completed a certificate to mentor new teachers through the partnership of UW-Madison with the Dane County New Teacher Project. For the past four years, she has mentored MMSD new teachers. Doris’ efforts with the Eye Research Institute will be to establish and support volunteer connections between the ERI vision scientists and the staff and students in MMSD, with the goal of increasing teacher competence and confidence and expanding student interest in and knowledge of vision science.
