Research
Dr. Heyward has researched cone subtype and distribution in American black bear retinas
using immunohistochemistry and fluorescent microscopy of retinal wholemounts. Her current
research evaluates possible vasculature changes in canine patients with sudden acquired retinal
degeneration syndrome (SARDS) which causes acute blindness in dogs and has a poorly
understood cause.
