Research

Dr. Oikawa is strongly interested in glaucoma research, spontaneous animal models for medical research, and comparative ophthalmology. His main research focus is comparative glaucoma, including the genetics and pathobiology of glaucoma in humans and animals as well as advanced imaging of the retina and optic nerve. He recently identified neuroinflammatory responses as playing important pathological roles in glaucomatous optic neuropathy by utilizing advanced molecular approaches and bioinformatic analysis.
