Research Interests
Dr. Barbara Klein is Professor of Ophthalmology and Adjunct Professor of Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. She has over 35 years of experience in epidemiologic research of age-related eye diseases and ocular complications of diabetes, including glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. She is co-principal investigator of two landmark population-based epidemiologic studies, the Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy (WESDR) and the Beaver Dam Eye Study (BDES). The findings from these two studies have been instrumental in improving medical and ophthalmologic care for people with age-related eye conditions and people with diabetes, and the methodology and protocols developed in the WESDR and BDES have been used in other epidemiologic studies and clinical trials worldwide. Dr. Klein is also co-director of the Ocular Epidemiology Reading Center, which provides grading of ocular photographs for numerous studies throughout the United States and the world. She has authored or co-authored over 800 reports in peer-reviewed journals and over 30 book chapters.
