Research
My chief interest is in the area of molecular and cellular regulation of neuronal effectors. I would like to
understand the biochemical basis for modulation of neuronal activity by postsynaptic receptors. The sigma-1
receptor is especially intruiging because of its unique localization in the subsurface cisternae adjacent to the
postsynaptic membrane. I obtained my Ph.D in Russia where I worked on the cell biology of the Mauthner
neurons of fish. I immigrated to UK in 2001 where I studied mechanisms of vesicular fusion. In 2001 I came to
the US where I examined the defects in photoreceptor cells underlying the disease retinitis pigmentosa. Since
2003 using cell biological, pharmacological and behavior approaches I have focused on elucidating the
neuromodulatory function of the sigma-1 receptor in neuronal cells and its application in mechanism of
neurodegenerative diseases.
