Research Interests
Dr. Merriman’s research focus is the cone-dominant, diurnal visual system of the 13-lined ground squirrel. Much of her research time is devoted to supervising the captive breeding program, which has served investigators from the US, Asia, and Europe since 2007. Over the years, providing animals and custom-dissected tissues has expanded her research horizon well outside of vision and even neuroscience. Recently she has been privileged to collaborate on studies of muscle physiology, viral genomics, molecular biology of transposable elements, and comparative genetics of the control of coat patterning. Her primary emphasis is still on vision, including cone cell biology and retinal function during the metabolic state transitions associated with hibernation. She is currently part of collaborative work with MERI’s Joe Carroll, Brian Link, and Dan Lipinski at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where she is also Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
