Pediatric muscular dystrophy

Research Interests
Dr. Pillers’ research focus is in understanding the pathobiology and molecular basis of the nonmuscle manifestations of inherited muscular dystrophies. She also investigates the genetic basis of disease in the newborn, and the application of molecular diagnostic methods to complications of prematurity.  Dr. Pillers has conducted both bench and clinical research activities. Her clinical work has predominantly involved multicenter national and international clinical trials funded by NIH. These include: STOP-ROP, ET-ROP. Other clinical studies have been focused upon the clinical evaluation of patients who have defects in dystrophin that result in abnormal electroretinography. Dr. Pillers’ bench research has included traditional molecular approaches in concert with retinal electrophysiology in the mouse model. Her global interests in vision include retinopathy of prematurity, inherited disorders of vision with emphasis on the retina or RPE, and disorders of night vision. To this end, Dr. Pillers is building a program in Neonatal medicine that will place special emphasis on enhancing the vision outcome of NICU graduates.
