Mahsa Ranji supervises the Biophotonics Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Dr. Ranji’s broad research goal is to diagnose diseases early and quantitatively, translate benchtop techniques into clinical settings, and evaluate the efficacy of potential therapies. Monitoring mitochondrial redox state in real time will permit clinicians at the bedside to know for the first time when organ dysfunction has been sustained and/or is progressing. These custom made optical tools have enabled Dr. Ranji to probe redox state and energy homeostasis in organs such as eyes, lungs, and kidneys ex-vivo and in-vivo over time. In collaboration with UW – Madison, her lab has studied diabetic retinopathy effects on mitochondrial function over time that has resulted in journal publications. They expect to perform these optical studies in vivo in eye diseases in the future.
