Research Interests
Mohammad Ali Saghiri’s research interests focus on biomedical engineering, image processing, computer science, Nanotechnology and tissue engineering in dentistry and ophthalmology, particularly in understanding the mechanisms of angiogenesis and Nano surface interactions (angiogenesis plays an important role in regenerative medicine). Dr. Saghiri is interested in the application of CAD/CAM, Nanotechnology and image analysis techniques to custom-made ophthalmological and dental appliances. He has worked with oral maxillofacial and general radiologists to develop a system based on artificial neural networks for the segmentation of tooth and tumors in Root Canal Therapy (RCT). Currently, Dr. Saghiri is working on isolating pulp cells (PC) and determining the effect of biomaterials (including bio and Nano cements) on PC cell function.

In a new area of research, Dr. Saghiri is using the Sheibani lab’s retinal endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes and their human counterparts prepared from human stem cells to develop three-dimensional vascular networks for assessment of drug toxicity in the central nervous system. In this work, the Sheibani lab is partnering with a broad network of researchers at UW-Madison who have received a $6 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to advance knowledge of the effects of environmental toxins. This grant, announced in March 2015, will create the Human Models for Analysis of Pathways (H-MAPs) Center at UW-Madison.
